Troubleshooting

Rosemary Extract is often used as an antioxidant to effectively slow rancidity in oils and oil based products.  We usually add Rosemary Extract at .1% of total oils to protect the more unstable oils in this formulation from rancidity.

There are those who say that the saponification process eliminates the need for an antioxidant as the oils are no longer oils, but soap. Others say that the soap made with oils still needs protection regardless of the saponification process, so until this controversy is settled, I prefer to take the safest route.

We love the scent of lavender and in this bar, we've also added moisturizing oils and butters to pamper the skin.  Like the Ylang Ylang goat milk soap, we used 1/4 condensed goat milk to 3/4 distilled water for a wonderful bar that is light tan in color.

This batch was crafted using the same basic instructions for goat milk formulations outlined here. The oils were weighed and measured into the stainless steel stockpot and set over low heat to melt.  Coconut and Palm of course, are added for their hardening, cleansing, and lathering properties. Goat Milk has gentle, nourishing qualities that seem to agree with almost everyone, so it's been a preference around here as well.

6 oz of pre-chilled condensed Meyenberg Goat Milk and 17 oz pre-chilled distilled water was measured into the 4-cup Pyrex Measuring Cup.

The 4-cup measuring cup was placed in a large bowl and surrounded with ice and water. A meat thermometer was clipped to the measuring cup. 9 oz of lye (10% discount) was measured into the smaller pyrex measuring cup. Approximately 1/4 of the lye is poured into the milk/water right away and stirred until the temperature is between 80-90F. Slowly introduce more lye until it has all dissolved. Take care not to go over 130F or under 80F at any given time.

The oils and lye were combined when the lye mixture was at 120F and the oils were at 125F. Trace was achieved easily within 5-7 minutes using three stick blenders at between 2-3 minutes each. The ylang ylang essential oil was incorporated and the batch poured into the mold. Gel stage was reached in a little over an hour without insulation. Within 12 hours, the soap loaf was ready to be cut into bars and set to cure. All of this may vary depending on conditions in your area. We live in a warm, dry climate at 4,000 feet above sea level.

This is a very light tan (cream-colored) soap with a knockout scent and a generous amount of luxurious lather, even in hard water.

Note: Even if you are not substituting any of the base oils in our formulations with another oil, be sure to run the entire formula through a lye calculator to ensure that you are using the accurate amount of lye. Do this as a rule, regardless of circumstances. If you make it a habit, you won't go wrong.
